Causes of Dandruff

Dandruff is caused when the scalp has too little moisture or is severely dehydrated. This dryness could be observed on other parts of the body such as legs or feet.

Dry scalp could also be due to environmental factors such as cold air, chemical exposure or dust.

Skin conditions such as contact dermatitis or seborrheic dermatitis can also cause dryness and dandruff.

These conditions lead to the formation of oily, reddish scales which flake off causing dandruff.

Age, hormonal imbalance, genetic factors and emotional stress may also be cause dandruff.

Growth of the fungus malassezia also causes dandruff. It grows on the scalp and causes the skin cells to multiply rapidly.

How to Treat Dandruff

Dandruff has no treatment. It cannot be cured completely but the symptoms could be managed for long term. Usually, in mild dandruff, symptoms disappear without curing the scalp, while in chronic cases, special products are recommended to be used to get rid of the flakes and itching.

1. Changing Diet

Food rich in carbohydrates and sugar can cause stimulation of sebum secreting gland leading to the buildup of oil. So, avoid high carb diet.

2. Frequently Wash Hair

Dead skin cells and oil accumulate when then hair is washed less frequently. So, wash hair more often to reduce the buildup of scales and flakes. Use a good anti dandruff shampoo. For men who are prone to severe dryness by using anti dandruff shampoo, can also use hair growth products for men that contain added ingredients to prevent flakiness.

3. Try Exfoliation of Your Scalp

Scalp exfoliators are extremely useful in removing dead skin cells and gently lifting the top layer of the scalp.

4. Use a Hot Oil Scalp Mask

Application of oil on scalp will help in extracting extra oil accumulated in the pores of the skin. Heat coconut oil in microwave and gently massage it over the scalp.

5. Use Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is not only a beneficial toner, a hot water salve but also an excellent ingredient to get rid of dandruff.

6. Using Specially Formulated Shampoos and Hair Products

Shampoos and hair products containing zinc or sulfur compounds (for example, pyrithione zinc, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, salicylic acid, coal tar etc.)  Can reduce the fungal growth leading to controlled production of flakes. Shampoos containing tree tea oil are effective in treating dandruff because it has antifungal properties.

7. Avoid Scratching

Do not scratch off the flakes. The scales are definitely itchy but scratching them off can increase inflammation and cause irritation. It can also cause formation of wounds on the scalp making them prone to infection.

When to Consult the Doctor

If washing hair with anti-dandruff shampoo or using any other home remedy for more than a month has not caused any improvement in the formation of flakes, the skin condition continues to get worse with visible signs of inflammation and redness, it is the right time to make an appointment with a dermatologist. This is because you might be suffering from any other skin condition, continuous use of shampoos and chemicals may cause more damage to the scalp. The dermatologist will then look at the skin and may find out conditions like eczema or psoriasis, which is not dandruff but produce dandruff-like symptoms.

Though dandruff has no cure, proper care of the scalp can significantly reduce and control the symptoms of dry, itchy scalp. Always consider doctor’s advice while using a product  and make sure you all well aware of the ingredients you are allergic to. using a product that contains too many chemicals can cause the skin conditions to worsen.
